Make sure you understand the growth habits of any plants before you decide to plant them at a fixed location in your garden. For example the Ficus species;- If potted, make sure the roots don’t wander out from the pot and root into the ground or wherever there are cracks in the hard surfaces in your garden. Aside from the plant growing larger and healthier, the roots will find their way into your drainage or any other buried conduits and will be difficult to remove. So the best thing is to grow Ficus species in a suitably strong pot and keep it pot-bound. Trim off any roots that grow out of the pot. Even a beautifully trimmed hedge of Ficus microcarpa var. nitida can throw out its roots far and wide, even under your specially selected outdoor tiles!
